The Ford Mondeo MK5 was introduced in 2012 and with it a new electric steering rack.
The steering rack can fail from a number of different reasons, the most common rason for steering rack failure is due to water ingress. Due to the position of the steering rack on the vehicle they can often become submerged in water and over time this can get into the electric motor on the unit and cause it to swell and crack. Once this has happened there is no possiblity for repair and the unit will need to be replaced.
