Seat Mii, VW up, Skoda Fabia, VW polo steering column initialisation

Upon refitting the steering column, you will need to undergo the following process in order to initialise the steering column to the vehicle.

  1. Upon starting the vehicle there will be two lights illuminated on the dash, one for the steering and one for the traction control. There will also be a fault code relating to the angle sensor, if all of these are true then you will need to attach a scanner that is capable of displaying a live data reading from the angle sensor.
  2. With a scanner connected, select steering assist module 44, then you will need to select Angle sensor initialise / calibrate. You will then need to follow this procedure of; turning the wheel 180 ° right, turn 180° left then back to the centre. Drive straight forward slowly for a few meters. On the scanner go back to the steering centre, follow the scanner to exit. This should turn the steering light on the dash off.
  3. The traction control light will still be on at this point. On the scanner go to: ABS angle sensor initialisation and follow the same procedure as above, turning the wheel 180 ° right, turn 180° left then back to the centre. Drive straight forward slowly for a few meters. Once you have completed this select ok on your scanner and exit.
  4. All lights should now be off, if they are you will need to go back into the scanner and clear all DTC, if either light is still present then the initialisation has not been completed correctly and this will need to be redone.
