In 2009 The BMW Z4 E89 was updated to use a newer style electric steering rack, this unit can fail in a number of ways.
Often the steering rack can loose communication with the vehicle causing a total loss of power steering. They can also fail due to internal electric components within the motor becoming worn, this can create either intermittant power steering or a total loss. The can also suffer from water ingress into the unit which can lead to an electronic failure.
